Late Dr. Bijay Narain Singh was a towering personality and one of the most handsome orthopaedic surgeons we have had. His knowledge of orthopaedics was immense and his dedication to profession was inspiring.
He was born in a village of Barhaiya, Begusarai, Bihar in 1945. He did his schooling from Patna Collegiate, Patna. He graduated as bachelor of medicine and bachelor in surgery from Rajendra Medical College and Hospital, Ranchi in 1968. He got his MS Orthopaedics from Prince of Wales Medical College, Patna (now Patna Medical College) in 1971 under Professor Dr B Mukhopadhyay. Then he joined provincial Govt. Service in the same year.
In 1975 he proceeded to the United Kingdom for further surgical training. He received fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and Mch, Orthopaedics from Liverpool university and returned in 1985. After returning back he served as senior consultant, orthopaedics in Guru Govind Singh Hospital, Patna. After voluntary retirement in 1995 he was actively engaged in private practice.
Dr. B.N. Singh was a life member of Indian Medical Association, Bihar Orthopaedic Association, Indian Orthopaedic Association, Association of Surgeons of India, World Orthopaedic Concern, Indian Society for study of Pain, Indian Foot Society, Bombay Orthopaedic Society and Asia Pacific Orthopaedic Association. He was an active member of SICOT and British Orthopaedic Association since 1985.
Apart from professional bodies he was a member of Rotary International, past President of Rotary Patna Mid town, Paul Harris fellow, former member and chairman of Polio Plus Committee, GSE committee and Help to the Handicapped.
He had presented scientific papers in national and international meetings on many occasions. During his Presidentship of Bihar Orthopaedic Association in 2003 along with Dr Amulya Kumar Singh as Secretary the association was awarded prestigious Dr A.K.Gupta Trophy of Indian Orthopaedic Association after gap of 26 years. He was conferred the Life Time Achievement Award on 22nd Feb. 2020 by Bihar Orthopaedic Association.
He has been an active and noted member of the Rotary International Polio Plus Committee representing Bihar and Jharkhand for seven years and saw the end of Polio in Bihar in September 2010.
He had the hobby of listening music and travelling. He travelled more than 40 countries across the globe.
His wife Dr. Mrs. Usha Sharma, MBBS, MRCOG London, FRCOG London is a noted practicing Gynaecologist. Presently she is National President of association for Perinatology and Reproductive Biology.
Dr. Singh has two daughters. The elder daughter, Dr. Archana Singh, wife of Dr Ambuj Roy, Professor in cardiology, AIIMS, New Delhi is Additional Professor in Bio Chemistry in the same institute and the younger daughter, Mrs Urvashi Singh Hutt, wife of Mr Ken Hutt, is Director, Novartis Pharmaceuticals at American Headquarters. He has three grandchildren named Arunabh, Avechal and Adam.
Dr. Bijay Narain Singh left for heavenly abode on 18/06/2020. He will always be fondly remembered by the entire orthopaedic fraternity and and will inspire us to serve our patients with the highest ethical standards.
