The onslaught by COVID-19 has left behind many wounds still bleeding. Humanity has been so humbled by the powerful merciless assault by this tiny virus that the world order was compelled to kneel down. The impact of COVID-19 was so brutal that it enslaved the spirit of freedom of human race and imposed such restrictions on public life as to even make staying alive unpredictable. The health-care system globally fought the invader blindfolded with bare arms. Life in general went back to basics, jobs and livelihood were lost, many industries collapsed, the concept of business changed, and black clouds of gloom engulfed the social set ups. Social distancing, maintenance of hand hygiene, and wearing masks became the life slogan. While the year 2020 had been the year to ponder, colleagues shared their knowledge on online webinars. The option of remote access by telemedicine and online consultations has prospered as the medical personnel struggled hard to understand this new enemy and to innovate to defeat it. Scientists all over the world joined hands to formulate vaccines to contain this new virus. India has proved to be the world leader in Covid vaccination by successfully launching the biggest free mass vaccination program. Humanity eventually has survived among predictions of annihilation and mass extermination.
Our editorial board has made consistent efforts to improve the quality of publication during this Covid era. This journal has passed the acid test of getting indexed and this issue of JODT is the first issue to get published after DOAJ indexing. The focus of this issue has been on interesting topics like coping with the trend of orthopedic practice during the new order of COVID-19 during the debatable knowledge about how the virus transmits. While the medical persons were the privileged first in receiving Covid vaccination, the strategy for the prevention of spread has been focused on the use of protective gears and social distancing. The medical effects of COVID-19 are now getting obvious even when the sword of Damocles of the third wave and the vicious mutant strains of the novel virus keep hanging on our heads. Increase in musculoskeletal pain, long-standing fatigue, neuraesthenia, exacerbation of preexisting morbidities, appearance of latent disorders are newer challenges orthopedic surgeons are facing today. The World Health Organization guideline to hold elective procedures as long as one can is testing our patience while the sick are waiting for their turn to get treated. The health insurance sector is revising and curriculum of medical education is revised to incorporate the current change. To keep up their pledge of Hippocratic oath, many orthopaedic surgeons laid down their lives.
This issue covers interesting topics on the various fields of orthopedics ranging from changing trends amongst orthopedic surgeons in their practice to orthopedic oncology, trauma epidemiology, trauma management, and recommendations in the management of arthroscopic reconstructions. Interesting case reports and concerns on post-covid musculoskeletal mucormycosis shall make interesting reading.
Welcome to the Covid era of Orthopedics!
